Baileys' Wine

Baileys of Glenrowan 1904 Block Shiraz - 2005

Bottle Size: 750ml

Once again, the dry grown, low yielding vines have produced a wine of considerable beauty and complexity.  Deep red in colour, this elegant wine features aromas of bramble and blood plum with hints of liquorice and spicy French oak. The full-bodied palate displays ripe fruit characteristics, an exceptional structure and long, chalky tannins. The lingering finish is full of flavour.

Viticulture

The fruit for this wine was harvested by hand from the block of vines planted on the Baileys of Glenrowan Bundarra Vineyard in 1904.  The 103-year-old 1904 block vines were the first vines to be replanted on grafted rootstock after the devastation of phylloxera.  The soils in the Glenrowan area are old, deeply weathered red soils, ideal for the production of premium wine grapes.  This block is dry grown which, in the warm climate of Glenrowan, ensures that fruit is extremely ripe and unique in its intensity.  The 2005 vintage was characterised by drought conditions, with the hot, dry weather reducing yields but producing fruit with rich flavour and great depth of colour.

Vinification

The wine was crafted using traditional methods such as open fermentation and the use of Baileys' historic basket press. Before being pressed, the juice was exposed to skins and solids for an extended period to extract the rich colour and intense flavours for which the Glenrowan region is renowned.  The wine was then allowed to mature in a blend of new and seasoned French oak for 20 months.

Suggested food

Enjoy with roasted beef fillet with caramelised onion jam, baked lamb racks with a chestnut and sage crust or aged cheeses such as Milawa Blue or cheddar.

Cellaring

This wine has superb cellaring potential and can be enjoyed over the next eight to twelve years if stored correctly.
